Abstract

The present study examines the relationship between corruption and the unemployment rate in Afghanistan during 2002–2021 and analyzes it empirically. The analytical framework employed in this research is based on the model previously applied by Onchari in his study on Kenya titled the same. The required data were obtained from the World Bank and analyzed using EViews. The ordinary least squares (OLS) method was applied to evaluate the effects of independent variables on the dependent variable. The findings indicate that although the relationship between corruption and the unemployment rate is positive, it is not statistically significant. Similarly, the relationship between inflation and the unemployment rate is negative but also statistically insignificant. These two relationships are theoretically consistent but not empirically validated. In contrast, foreign direct investment shows a negative, statistically significant relationship with the unemployment rate, a result supported both theoretically and empirically.
