Abstract

The present study aimed to predict forgiveness among students of the Faculty of Education at Shaikh Zayed University, based on optimism and empathy. The study employed a descriptive–correlational design, and the data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and simultaneous multiple regression. The statistical population included all students of the faculty, from whom 195 participants were selected through random sampling using Morgan’s table. The research instruments consisted of the Thompson Forgiveness Scale (2005), the Empathy Scale (EQ-8), and the Life Orientation Test developed by Scheier and Carver (1994). The results indicated a significant positive relationship among optimism, empathy, and forgiveness. The overall regression model for predicting forgiveness was significant; however, only optimism significantly predicted forgiveness, while empathy was not significant after controlling for optimism. The findings suggest that optimism plays a more prominent role in explaining forgiveness and that strengthening optimistic attitudes may increase forgiveness.
