Abstract

This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of Kabul University students about people with mental health disorders using a descriptive cross-sectional method. Data from 340 respondents were included in the final analysis. Data were collected using two standardized questionnaires and analyzed using a one-sample t-test and linear regression in SPSS-26. The results indicated that there was no statistically significant association between demographic variables (age, year of study, and field of study) and students’ knowledge and attitudes. Relationship with mentally ill person, education about mental illness, and experience of mental problems, despite creating a significant difference in the level of knowledge, did not lead to a significant change in attitude. Also, knowledge of mental illness explained only a small part of the differences in attitudes toward individuals with mental disorders. Findings show that increasing knowledge about mental illness alone is not enough to change attitudes toward mentally ill people.
