Abstract

Tolerance (or its absence) is a central issue in human thought. The clearest definition of tolerance is reflected in Voltaire’s famous statement: "I do not agree with your opinion, but I will defend your right to express it until my death." This statement illustrates that tolerance involves both protest and acceptance. One of the fundamental assumptions of tolerance, which links it to pluralism, is the belief that multiple paths lead to truth and happiness. Conversely, believing in a single absolute path to truth and knowledge fosters intolerance. Without a culture of tolerance, societies cannot develop pluralistic thinking, the willingness to coexist peacefully, mutual acceptance, avoidance of violence, and social progress.
